Last Spring in an open community meeting, Glen residents came together to re-imagine the role of our community association. One of the six areas of action discussed was facilitation and support for the hamlet’s activities, events and community groups.

To encourage our village way of life, a new website www.glenwilliams.org was launched this Spring to operate as a hamlet portal. The goal is to provide a digital space to share information about volunteer groups, activities and events in the Glen.

As a first step, we have included a calendar of events that can be found at www.glenwilliams.org/events/month/ Your Glen volunteer group or activity can post information on this calendar by contacting our webmaster Sandy Gillians. There are future plans to add a tab on the website menu for Community Groups and Volunteer Opportunities. Help grow the functionality of this GWCA sponsored website by checking it out and suggesting content.

Busy in Glen Williams

Glen groups and activities run all year long, but there is something about the warmer weather and the longer days of the Spring that seem to bring more things alive.

On April 18, the GWCA Board hosted a get-together for 25 members who had volunteered to become Neighbourhood Reps. It was an opportunity to meet neighbours and learn about interests and concerns from every corner of the Glen. Be on the lookout for a bookmark being distributed door-to-door by these volunteers encouraging you to go online to confirm interest in the Glen e-newsletter and membership in the GWCA.

On April 26, the GWCA held a “Lessons Learned” Community Meeting at the Town Hall. It was an opportunity for residents to learn about the recent Eden Oak OMB Hearing process. With 3 more subdivisions planned for the Glen, the evening was organized to familiarize and assist resident groups living near those proposed developments to get ready.

The residents and community groups of Glen Williams are fortunate to have access to a unique centrally located building for their events and activities. Your group can rent the Glen Williams Town Hall by contacting Janice Giles.

On May 20 at 8:00am, The Glen Williams Town Hall Board and its many volunteers are running the Annual Shrub on the St. John’s UC property. They will be selling shrubs donated by Sheridan Nurseries and St. John’s volunteers will be selling hanging flower baskets, muffins and cups of coffee.

Celebrating Canada Day in the Glen was originated by the Town Hall Board in 1976. The many volunteers of this year’s Canada Day 150 Committee have been meeting monthly in 2017. There is still time to volunteer by joining the 7:30 pm planning meetings set for May 17 and June 28. For more information please contact Anthea Hoare.

Thank you to the volunteers behind these and other community activities in the hamlet. Your efforts strengthen our sense of place that comes from living in the Glen.
